What is a Parent Intensive?

Parent Intensives offer a potent method to speed up the healing process compared to regular parent therapy sessions. Instead of attending therapy once a week, you’ll dedicate a substantial block of time—such as 3 hours or 3 days—for focused therapeutic, psychoeducational, or coaching work. This approach provides the benefits of Parent Therapy in a condensed timeframe, eliminating gaps between sessions. It enables individuals to dive deeper and thrive sooner.

How do Parent Intensives work?

Before the Parent Intensive, we have a Pre-Intensive Interview to clarify your goals. We’ll examine your current situation, including your support system, stressors, coping mechanisms, and areas where you seek relief, growth, or significant progress. During the Parent Intensive, we focus on two main objectives: alleviating the pain in your life and enhancing the positive aspects. We achieve this through the interweaving of psychodynamic therapy, Hakomi therapy, TEAM-CBT, psychoeducation, parenting skills coaching and resourcing activities such as guided meditation. Depending on your needs, we may explore your early relationships and attachment or focus on future-oriented parenting goals. This process is tailored specifically to you. After the Parent Intensive, we’ll meet for a Post-Intensive Interview to discuss the most impactful elements of your Intensive and how to integrate them into your daily life.

In-person in Brooklyn, NY or online. Parent intensive sessions are similar to your own personal custom retreat or workshop. I encourage you to allow your time outside of sessions to be unscheduled or filled only with self-care activities like exercise, bodywork (acupuncture, massage), and creative expression – drawing, painting, or cooking.

No problem! Even if you don’t live in New York State, as long as you have an individual therapist who is willing to collaborate with Dr. Coor, you’re welcome to schedule a Skills or Coaching Intensive if you’d like to work virtually. If you prefer to travel to Brooklyn, NY for in-person work I’m happy to share a list of my local “Favorite Things” to help you make the most of your outside-of-session time.

Some insurance plans will reimburse a portion of the cost of an Intensive Program.  Please know that the insurance company requires a diagnosis code as a reason for treatment.  I recommend calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card in order to get details about your specific plan. I’m happy to provide more information to help with this process.

Instead of working on your issue in small increments across several weeks or months, Parent Intensives allow you to experience accelerated therapeutic or personal growth results that can more quickly offer noticeable change in the quality of your life. In a focused and individually designed Parent intensive there is more uninterrupted time to process through issues that keep popping up and derailing your inner peace, allowing you to access more joy in your parent-child relationship, as well as a deeper connection to yourself and to your child. If you add up the cost of weekly therapy over a year, a Parent Intensive is actually more cost effective. Instead of waiting months, you can get the same results in a few days.

While Parent Intensives offer a focused and accelerated approach to addressing parenting challenges, it’s important to understand that they are not a magic solution. Each person’s journey is unique, and the success of the program depends on several factors, including your readiness for change, the specific issues you’re facing, and your active participation in the process.

The goal is to create a supportive environment where you can gain valuable insights, develop new skills, and make meaningful progress. While I can’t guarantee specific outcomes, I’m committed to working collaboratively with you to achieve your desired results.

Instead of focusing on fixing everything at once, Parent Intensives are designed to provide a concentrated period of growth and learning. We will work together to identify your most pressing concerns and develop a tailored plan to address them. By the end of the program, you can expect to feel empowered, equipped with new tools, and ready to take the next steps on your parenting journey.

Remember, lasting change often requires ongoing effort and support. An Parent Intensive can provide a powerful foundation for your growth, but it may be beneficial to consider additional support, such as ongoing therapy or coaching. Please note that Therapeutic and Coaching Intensives are designed as adjuncts to existing therapy and require prior consultation with your therapist.
